Faaltless galloped on Saturday morning at Rosehill, sent over 1000 timed at 1.13.48 12.63 his last furlong, he is bright and happy in himself and will run on Saturday 18th June. With a long range weather forecast for rain and more rain the track will be to his liking.

Phar Lap performances

We had a very rewarding day at the Phar Lap racecourse, Timaru yesterday, coming away from the meeting with a win and two second placings.

Evergreen Jardena was the winner of the last race on the card, patiently ridden by Courtney Van der Werf, she sited the leader throughout the running by a minimum of 10-12 lengths, and made her run before the turn and cruised up to the pace making Imthejoker, Courtney was able to claim 3kg off Jardena which certainly was a big assist.

Masons Run also put in a big performance running out of his grade, for some weight relief, running second behind Ishabeel, he looks like he will be in for another good season with two solid efforts in his resuming runs. Bejewelled also lived up to her electric track work on Tuesday, running second, she missed the jump and raced back with plenty of racing room and ran home nicely.

Faaltless debuts in Sydney

Our outstanding winter galloper Faaltless will debut at Rosehill in Sydney on Saturday. The winner of 6 of his last 11 starts he is on the rise and deserves a shot at good prize money.
A number of factors led to this decision. The first is that Faaltless (or Tommy as he is known) is at his best on loose wet ground and these should be the conditions he strikes in Sydney over the next couple of months. The second was the lack of opportunities for him over the next few weeks. He would either have to travel a considerable distance within New Zealand or run on very deep tracks, which isn’t to his liking.
The final factor was that he was rated 82 in Sydney, which gives us a number of race options for him. The first of those is on Saturday where he will carry 59 kilos in a Benchmark 80 1350 metres worth A$70,000. His performance in this will determine his next start which will be on either the 18th or 25th of June.
His goal will be the Triton Handicap over 1800 metres on the 9th of July at Randwick. With three runs under his belt we will then decide whether to leave him in Sydney or bring him back to New Zealand for the Winter Cup on the 6th of August.
Shane Marr has travelled with him and continues to be his trainer."

Faaltless thriving in Sydney

Faaltless arrived in Sydney on Wednesday morning after being loaded at 4 am (NZ time) flying direct from Christchuch to Sydney, he then a short float trip to the Rosehill stable of Tim Martin where he will be based. He has worked well this morning and Shane reports he is bright and well and his usual self. He will debut on Saturday in a Benchmark 80 race for a stake of A $70 000, he will carry 59kg and his regular rider Robbie Hannam will travel to Sydney to ride him. The track is a Heavy 9 at this stage.

All going well Faaltless will stay in Sydney for the month of June where he will have 3 runs and then look to return home, where the Winter Cup is a consideration.

Faaltless decisive fresh up
Outstanding winter galloper Faaltless broke new ground on Saturday when taking out the Rating 90 1200 metres at Riccarton on premier day.
It was his first win fresh up, over 1200 metres and at Riccarton Park. Good horses can overcome obstacles that are against them though and he was able deliver a strong win. He is a horse that is best suited to longer distances than this and he will step up in ground now. We are considering a Sydney campaign for him this winter and his next step will either be at Trentham on the 28th of May when he contests an open 1400 metre race or he will be on a plane to Australia.
We are looking at options and will make a decision in the next week."

Jardena

Jardena has started her new campaign off well with an eye catching run for fourth on the first day of the Blenheim circuit, the track had improved for the second day so we elected to not run her and wait for Riccarton and hopefully some rain. David Walsh was very impressed with her run and for want of some racing room she would of been right in contention for first placing. Immediate plans for her after Riccarton will most probably be towards the Gore meeting at the end of the month.

After a very pleasing day on the first day of the Blenheim circuit, with a win and many placings, we had good runs with mixed results on the second day. The track had dried out considerably and improved throughout the day to a state where some horses didn't finish their races off on a faster track. All horses have travelled home well and we will now be looking for some rain for their next assignments. Miss Cool since her win at Blenheim has been retired due to the discovery when we returned home of swelling on a knee and subsequently after investigation a bone chip.

Our horses have come through the first day of racing in fine order and Miss Cool, Senorita Lopez, Bradnor, Inquisition, Lil Miss Tait and Bejewelled will all run again on Sunday all have walked well this afternoon and will have a canter in the morning. Jardena will wait for more rain with the track conditions coming back to Good. Miss Tessa will also wait after debuting on Thursday. Once again the Marlborough Racing Club have been very hospitable to all visitors and the weather has played its part.

Blenheim Racing

The two day Blenheim circuit on Thursday 28th April and Sunday the 1st of May has come around again, we have 10 horses nominated at this stage for the first day and will also have to nominate all for the second day, but plans are not set in concrete for the second days racing as it will be dependent on how the horses come through the first day. Many are kicking off their Winter campaigns but should give a good account of themselves fresh. Horses that are heading at this stage are Masons Run, Faaltless, Lil Miss Tait, Bradnor, Inquisition, Miss Cool, Jardena, Bejewelled, Miss Tessa, Senorita Lopez.

Faaltless showed he was back in action with an impressive victory in the OPEN 1000m catchweight at the Rangiora Trials today. Robbie Hannam made a special trip down to Christchurch to re unite with him and was suitably impressed with the way he trialled, he trialled in his normal racing pattern, settling off the speed and when asked exploding to the front, his winning margin was 1 1/2 lengths over Kincaple Princess and 1 length to Miss Thorn.

Last winter he fashioned an impressive record with 5 wins for that season.

He will look to resume at Riccarton in early May, with some good form and a couple of runs under his belt he has many options for some nice prize money open to him.

Farewell Izuan

Stable apprentice Izuan Khairil returned home to Malaysia today to continue his riding career. We have had a very good association with Izuan and his riding and hope that some of the younger horses that he has put some educational work into will go on to do good things for him. Izuan was a good hearted, personable and very funny employee as well as a friend and part of our family, we no doubt will catch up with him at some stage in the future. We hope his favourite horse Mt Difficulty can go on to shine.

Queensland owned Crosscannons flew out for the Sunshine Coast this morning where he will do his future racing.

Crosscannons an impressive individual is by Handsome Ransom has had three race day appearances for a form line of 4-4-3 behind well performed horses such as Go Go Dingo, Santos and Peace. He is a horse who has natural speed but will excel over more ground. While it is sad to lose one of the characters of the stable it will be exciting to follow his racing in Australia and are thrilled that Lex and Sharron Nichols will now get a chance to watch him race in the flesh and for some attractive stake money.

Velocita Di Santo made an impressive debut at Wingatui on Saturday.

He is an outstanding individual not only in the looks and temperament department but has speed and stamina to match, hence his name meaning St Speed.

His debut win showed he has raw talent, with improvement to come. Darryl Bradley reported the horse was waiting for horses to come and race him in the home straight, when they started finishing off their races and he heard them coming he found another gear.

Velocita Di Santo has always showed alot of potential and the stable has had big wraps on him since he started fast work, his trial debut was on a slow track which he was never happy in and his only other trials appearance was at Banks Penninsula where he won on a dead track. The track was officially dead on Saturday which he had no problems with, but is a horse who appreciates better tracks and like his Derby winning sire St Reims he will get over ground.

Not So Difficult

Mt Difficulty broke through finally today for his maiden victory at the Omakau racecourse in Central Otago in the Maiden 1100m ridden by his biggest fan stable apprentice Izuan Khairil, rather apt considering he is named after a Central Otago wine.

Mt Difficulty(Ernie) has showed us in track work for quite some time that he truely has some ability, and his race race record holds at 9 career starts for 3 seconds 1 third 1 fourth and 2 fifths. Finishing behind some nice types in Aluminium Bike Rack, Kincaple Princess,Davinsky and Champagne Needed.

We hope his connections will all enjoy a drop or two of Mt Difficulty in their celebrations tonight.

Other runners were; Soldiers Tale who also put in a big run for second in the 0-1 win 1100 from a wide draw and carrying 4.5kg more weight than the claiming Wine and Soda. It was good to see him flatten out in his finish.

Waiting also drew very wide however had no luck in the running to get in and ran 8th, Seniorita Lopez was very disappointing in the Maiden 2000 finishing last however on pulling up and cooling out it was evident that she was heavily in season and will now not run on Sunday and return home, travel can often bring fillies into season and this seems to be the cause.

All horses are in the fields on Sunday for Cromwell racing and we will know more tomorrow which ones are likely to back up from today.

Earthquake in Christchurch

Marr Racing Stables is standing and all horses are physically fine, although we are very shaken and still can not believe what has happened again we are very lucky to all be ok, our thoughts are with all of our family and friends who are not as fortunate as us and although there are some tough times ahead we will come out the other side very lucky indeed.

Inquisition put on a classey display to lead by 2 lengths throughout dominating all his rivals, taking his winning margin on the line to 3 1/2 lengths over River Haze.

Inquisition is a horse with a lot of ability who sometimes leaves this at home on race day, however he is a very happy horse at the moment. He has shown he is able to stay over distance and appreciates rain affected tracks. Well ridden by Izuan Khairil he reported the further in front Inquisition was, the happier he felt and faster he wanted to go.

Smart win from Soldiers Tale

The Shane Marr trained Soldiers Tale got his career underway at Riccarton today with a smart win over 1200 metres at his second start.

A big, strong, correct horse by Stravinsky out of the Group 3 winning Volksraad mare Foxy Blonde, he had a tough run at his first start but fought well for fourth. That race was invaluable for experience and he raced a lot kinder today.

From the outside barrier draw he began quickly and rolled up to sit outside the leader. Given his head at the 300 metres he accelerated quickly to put a couple of lengths on his opposition and he held well.

Depending on how he pulls up he now may race at Dunedin next Saturday in a rating 70 1200 metres worth $17,500. The welfare of the horse comes first and he will only go there if we are confident he has come through this race well.
He has a lot of scope to improve as he was a late foal and should only continue to improve as he strengthens and matures. He is owned by the Go Racing With The Foxy Blonde syndicate whose members are spread from Christchurch to Auckland"

Soldiers Tale Impressive

Soldiers Tale was an impressive winner at Riccarton Park, in just his second race day start and third appearance on a racetrack.

After Jumping well from his wide draw of 15, Jamie Bullard elected to slide forward and put him in the race he settled nicely and was a happy horse following before taking the lead and holding it from second place runner Royal Governess (long neck) and Sourire ( 1 1/4 lengths). His race debut for fourth saw him also draw wide and lead, however the improvement in his fitness and ring craft had him ready for his win today.

Soldiers Tale or around the stables 'Bert' is a strapping son of two fast horses in Stravinsky and Foxy Blonde, he has taken time to furnish into his large frame and is still developing mentally.

Soldiers Tale was a 2009 Premier sale purchase by Go Racing Ltd from the Haunui Farm draft.

Two-year-olds hopeful for a place in the 14-horse field for the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Million have just a few more chances to secure their spot in the $1,000,000 feature at Ellerslie next Sunday.

Saturday’s Group II Westbury Stud Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham will see four Karaka Million-eligible horses contest the $85,000 feature. With first through fourth placegetters set to receive anywhere from $50,000 (first) - $4,000 (fourth), this race could provide runners The Aftershock (Nadeem ex Queens Move) and Smoke n Mirrors (Fast ‘n’ Famous ex Bayswater), a little more breathing space in the current Karaka Million Order of Entry, where they sit at 19th and 20th place respectively before likely defections are taken into account. Other race and Karaka Million-eligible runners, Ellatain (Captain Rio ex Chloella) and Fiscal Wings (Fusaichi Pegasus ex Cashier) will need to run into at least second place to secure their spot at Ellerslie next weekend.

Meanwhile on Saturday and slightly ‘closer to home’ at Counties will be another three Karaka Million hopefuls running; this time contesting the $10,000 Murdoch Newell 2YO. The Aftershock will be entered for the Wakefield Stakes at Trentham on Saturday 22nd January.

The Wakefield traditionally produces a nice line up of Juveniles with last years Wakefield top two being Jimmy Choux and Cellarmaster, both went on to be two highly performing 3 year olds.

The Wakefield will be his first start since being gelded and we hope this gear change will help him focus on his job and really let down to the line. It is an $85000 race which will hopefully help boost his stake money to raise his ranking in the Karaka Million order of entry. 1st-5th would nearly guarantee him a start and 6-10 th placings also carry a $1000 stake.

All going to plan and performance he will then head from Wellington to Cambridge with Shane where they will be based at Steven Marsh's barn for the week leading into the Karaka Million 2 year old 1200m.

We have three horses trialing at Timaru on Tuesday, the first set of Trials in the south since before Christmas time.

A Lucky Unicorn filly (Lucy) who is having her first educational trial over 600m, she is a small filly but has a lot of gusto about her, a Postponed - Marrsharkup filly (Lallie) who has had time to mature and has been pleasing us with her work and attitude this time in and Velocitia De Santo (Macca) who we have had a very high opinion of and have given time to strengthen and learn before stepping out for a his debut.

'Jake' won with ease by 4 lengths at Hokitika yesterday, running a better time than the other distance races of the day and backing up his nice second at Kumara. Shane instructed Jamie Bullard to make a move for the front and try to put some pressure on to remian there, and it paid off, with him never looking like he was going to stop. Hopefully he will take some confidence out of his performance and go on to Riccarton in a good frame of mind.

Bradnor ran second in the Hokitika Cup, narrowly beaten by Noble Warrior. Ridden perfectly by Paul Taylor he was in the trail for most of the Journey looking for an out which was a little slow in coming, he had a little interference, but after looking at the film a protest was not lodged. He is a grand old man around the stable and a firm favourite so it was pleasing to see another good effort from him.

Gallops Circuit Underway at Reefton

The 1st of 4 days gallops starts tomorrow. Great to see 11 races on the card. Nice mix of northern and southern horses. The Pitman stables going nuts over the hols winning 6 one day, massive effort. Team Parsons in the zone as well so aint going to be easy for the Raes, Myers, Frost, McKenzies and other Nth Island stables but to quote the self proclaimed #1 racecaller in NZ' bring it on'.

Hope the forecasters get it wrong with the weather though and then onto the famous nuggets day at Kumara. Its 125 years for them tjis year so its planned to be a huge night/day/night there. James MacDonald is there to ride for Phillip and Peter Vela with Stephen Ramsay and Julia Ritchie taking the team south. The Velas colours have been successful all over the world and it will be great to see them at Kumara,with James as he is a headline act and its an iconic day on our calender. Some other stables going to the Kumara, Shaun Clotworthy, Ben Foote and Grant Shaw so its going to be a super competitve raceday.

Thousands of racegoers will fill Kumara on Saturday for the 125th Anniversary of the Kumara meeting and to be part of the fundraising initiative for the Pike River community, this move is part of Racing for the Coast, an initiative by race caller Tony Lee.

The track is a Heavy 10 but we always know to expect a Heavy surface at Kumara, the weather forecast is fine for Saturday.

We have four runners who seem to appreciate rain effected ground, all horses are bright and well and should run accordingly. Mary Pepper has not started in a very long time but is forward enough and will be on pace from her Draw of 1.

Two horses will head to Kurow tomorrow, it again will be a long day, with normal starting hours of 5am to get the team worked and then head to Kurow which is 3 1/2 hours drive by car, and then hopefully home after unloading the horses in bed by 11pm,

Bejewelled Race 8 Draw 2, we have removed all additional gear for tomorrows run and assess her from there, she is to be ridden by Ashlee Mundy, we will try and use her good draw and hopefully get the trail.
Sir Ram Race 10 Draw 6 to be ridden by his regular track work rider Jamie Bullard,
he has the addition of blinkers tomorrow and hope to go forward in the running.

The Aftershock has had "a significant gear change''

After his last start where he looked like he was going to win by 3 or 4 lengths and pulled up to let a filly past him and to be beaten only by a narrow margin the decision was made to geld 'Billy'. He has come through the gelding process very well and has no swelling or infection, he has had light trotting work and today was back at the track cantering on the sand, regular Jockey and track rider Jamie Bullard was more than happy with his work and reported he has taken no harm mentally from his experience this week.

All going well it will be onward and upward, heading towards The Wakefield Challenge Stakes(Group 2) in Wellington on Saturday 22 January which is the first day of the Wellington Cup carnival which is held over the three days the 22nd 24th and 29th. The Karaka Million in Auckland the following week is then on the agenda providing he meets the starting criteria.

Okavango is a winner of his last two trials and has kept improving in his preperation for his race day debut Wilson Oon will also claim 4kg off him.

Miss Cool is having her first start in the South Island after joining us from the Alan Sharrock stable, she is to be ridden by Wilson Oon who will claim 4kg.

It will be a big day for Wilson who will debut at Timaru, he has two nice rides and we wish him the best of luck.

Shane and I will travel to Otago on Christmas Day, while Cassidy and Charlotte head to Blackball on the West Coast with their Grandparents. Our Children are racing orphans, they have learnt to adapt to the Christmas period of horses and alot of racing.

The Boxing Day races are a twilight meeting, which will make for a long day, hopefully the horses entered can help make it a worthwile trip.

Another consistent day at the office for the team, possibly not the results we expected but never the less we were pleased with the day.

The Aftershock was home for all money in the 800m 2 year old event, when his colt manners kicked in and he decided to pull up to wait for everyone else, going down by a narrow margin, he will now look to be gelded and his racing plans adjusted around this. Cangowest drew wide and was back in the running, she was held up for racing room from the 400m to the 200m mark and flashed home for third, Mt Difficulty met interference and then over raced finishing 4th, Bradnor another good run finishing 7th running on from the back with the horses off the front taking the top positions, Inquisition was disappointing, he had all favours and gaps presented but failed to take them, Stopover was perhaps the most disappointing runner, he had a better experience before the race than at Cromwell and went to the barrier in good order, he was still a little fractious in the gates but jumped well and was put into the race by Danielle Johnson, she reported he travelled well and then was quite happy to drift in the running, he is mentally not finishing things off, the addition of blinkers may help him concentrate.

Stable apprentice Wilson Oon has been granted his apprentice licence after riding at numerous trial meetings under the newly introduced NZTR apprenticeship system.

Wilson is from Malaysia and has worked for the powerful stable of Laurie Laxon in Singapore . He is naturally light at 48kg and is showing promise. His latest win at the trials came on stable favourite "Rodney" Kaapstad - Flood gelding. We hope to have two rides for Wilson at the upcoming Timaru meeting.

The Stable at the moment is still full of horses, with many horses swapping stable life for a spelling paddock, and others returning to the stables. We have had two recent additions to the stables from the Central Districts, Miss Cool from the Sharrock stable and Mary Pepper from Lisa Latta, both horses will race in the Christmas period.

We have also had Sir Ram (His Royal Highness) join the team, he was an impressive debut winner at Waimate and has settled into the team very nicely Jockey Jamie Bullard rides him work most mornings.

We have also had a lovely Lucky Unicorn filly (Lucy) join the Stable after being pre- trained, she has jumped out of the barriers and is taking everything in her stride.

Crosscannons was gelded this week and has recovered very quickly and we look forward to getting him back to the races in a couple of months.

Trials at Ashbruton on Tuesday .

Soldiers Tale (Stravinsky-Foxy Blonde) really hit his straps and the powerful son of Stravinsky ran second to a very nice horse of Micheal Pitmans, he raced greenly in the straight looking to get off the rail, but all of this will come to him with practice.

Kaapstaad-Flood gelding won his second trial in a row, dominating the field in a very well ridden trial by stable apprentice Wilson Oon, 'Rodney' he has been slow to mature but has come of age.

Miss Tessa (1/2 sister to Bradnor) was very slow to begin missing the start by three lengths, she however flew home along the fence finishing only three lengths from the winner, she has gone to the spelling paddock and we are sure of a nice Autumn with her.

Senor Pete filly, had a very nice hit out over 1200m, she showed good speed to lead but was still a little green on the corner and lost ground, she recovered to run home for 4th. We would hope to find a nice 1600m race for her over the Christmas period.

Darci Brahma -Climb the Vine, had a very nice educational trial before heading to the spelling paddock, she was lost when the other runners crossed her and was reluctant to take a gap on the rail so was angled out and ran home nicely, she is a big beautiful filly who will be a lovely 3 year old filly type....hopefully another Ombre Rose.

Christmas at the Races on Friday 17.12.2010

A late start for the meeting of 1.28 pm and a very late finish of 7.35pm for Friday racing at Riccarton Park.

We have 6 very nice in form horses entered, who are all bright and well and hopefully with luck on the day, there will be a couple of winners amongst them.

The Aftershock was last start stakes placed in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton before a short spell, the 800m is too short for him and so we will be looking to use the race as a nice trial into his start at Dunedin on Boxing Day. Jamie Bullard will ride

Mt Difficulty was placed again at his last start at Cromwell and is not far away from getting a well deserved win. Izuan Khairil will ride

Inquisition will no doubt be well supported again by his loyal followers, hopefully they haven't already abandoned him, he is a lovely horse who always seems to leave his luck at home. Izuan Khairil will ride

Cangowest was placed at Timaru after being blocked for room and clear running, she has grown into a lovely mare and is working very well, she always tries very hard and gives a good account of herself. Izuan Khairil will ride.

Bradnor good effort again at Ashburton, he always seems at the moment to weight in, he will appreciate the big Riccarton track and we will look to ride him back. Izuan Khairil will ride.

Stopover It all turned to custard at his last start at Cromwell with heat stress and treatment for dehydration following the race by the Club Veterinarian. He appears to be back to normal. Jamie Bullard was very pleased with his final gallop this morning and hopefully he will put in a run similar to his Otago effort. Danielle Johnson will ride as Bully was committed to another horse which eventuates will not run.

Two horses suffered heat stress and some others needed to be hosed several times to cool down at the Cromwell race meeting on Sunday.

Many on course thought the temperature felt more like 30degC or higher than the 28degC recorded by MetService.

Veterinarians Peter Gillespie and Annemarie Wezenbeek said it was uncomfortable in the swab box. The swab box has a corrugated iron roof.

''With a horse in the (swab) box and door closed, it could have got to 40degC,'' Gillespie said.
He added the heat was the reason eight of the 10 horses swabbed were unable to provide urine samples. Instead, the eight had blood samples taken from them.
''The swab box turned into a sauna,'' Wezenbeek said.

Some trainers sought advice from the veterinarians when noticing their horse's recovery rate, after racing, was slow.

Little ventilation in loose boxes on hot days was a factor in horses recovering slowly after racing, Wezenbeek said.

Some horses on Sunday were sweating and blowing an hour after racing.

Stopover, trained in Christchurch by Shane Marr, was one of the horses treated by the veterinarians.
''The heat really affected him. He raced disappointingly and was quite distressed,'' Marr said.
''He got 2 litres of saline fluid into him after the race and that picked him up quickly.''

Marr and his team headed back to Christchurch an hour after the last race.

Gillespie said Sunday was the hottest day he had spent at a race meeting in 30 years of veterinary work."

Stakes placing for the Aftershock

A good and very promising run from The Aftershock on Saturday to finish 3rd in the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton.

He got a slight check early and got well back in the field, but he relaxed well and was happy. He got held up for a run at about the 400 metres and Jamie Bullard had to extract him from a gap where he lost momentum. Once balanced up again he accelerated, but did a lot of things wrong and Jamie had to stop riding him three times in the last 300 metres, when he shied away from other horses, or lugged in. He has made up 5 or 6 lengths in the straight and got within 3/4 of a length of winning and he is a horse with a big future.
He was the only horse in the field on Saturday that is not yet a 2yo by foaling date, so has a lot of improvement and will also race more kindly when he steps up over distance.

He will now be set for the $1,000,000 Karaka Million at Ellerslie on the 30th of January. By lunchtime on Sunday he was at the spelling farm where he will freshen up for 10 days. He will next race at Dunedin on Boxing Day in a 2yo 1000 metre race worth $10,000 and everything going to plan will then head north. He will have either a trial right handed in January, or a race if we need it as his lead in to the Karaka Million.

The Aftershock contests The Welcome Stakes

The well named The Aftershock, a son of Nadeem, contests the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton tomorrow for 2yo’s.

Billy as he is known, raced very well but greenly on debut for 3rd and we had high expectations for him going into his second start. He got a check however passing the 400 metres and never regained his momentum, finishing 5th.

We will allow him to find his feet tomorrow and won’t bustle him out of the gates as he seems to prefer racing this way. The questions is whether he is a genuine 1000 metre horse and he may need further, but he is talented and we are happy with him going into this race. Jamie Bullard rides.

Two runners, two seconds

Our two runners over the last three days have both finished 2nd which is encouraging as both are at the improving stage of their preparations.

On Sunday, Mt Difficulty, who has been desperate to get on a better track, settled midfield and unwound strongly to run 2nd in a very fast 3yo 1200 metres, which was run in 1.08.54. After a good debut 3rd, he struck two heavy 11 tracks which did not suit and the jockey lost his irons in his only other start, so his form was misleading and his starting price of $17.50 was well over the odds. He is likely to next start at Timaru on the 25th of November or Cromwell on the 27th of November.

On Melbourne Cup Day Stopover was a certainty beaten 2nd up over 1400 metres at Wingatui. He was trapped on the rail and only got out very late to dash into 2nd place. He is a horse with ability and we believe he has a very good future. He is likely to race next over either 1400 or 1600 metres, exactly where we will work out in the next few days.

We were very excited to hear the news from Michele House that Ombre Rose has foaled a colt by No Excuse Needed at Waikato Stud on Labour Day.

Ombre Rose (O'Reilly-Lady Chanele) Winner of 7 race includeing 3 Listed races Gr.1 placed and Gr. 2 placed is from a family that keeps producing winner after winner. Her brothers including Crabs and Golden Treasure have won 17 races between them. Her grand dam is Lady Joelyn who is the Dam of Aquidity 17 wins including multiple Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 and The Sportsman(10 wins)

Jardena wins Wyndham Cup

"Grey mare Jardena relished the heavy track to win yesterday's $12,000 Wyndham Cup.
She moved into contention on the turn and scampered clear for jockey Ashlee Mundy.
''I couldn't have got a better run,'' Mundy said.
''From the 1000m I was really travelling and I knew then I wouldn't get beaten.''

Mundy was making her second visit to Wyndham after riding a winning treble there at the corresponding meeting four years ago. Jardena is owned in Shane Marr's Riccarton stable by Andrea Todd. Mrs Todd and her husband Jarrod, who is a jockey, moved from Christchurch to Melbourne this year.
Mrs Todd is a former jockey and now rides trackwork for Mornington trainer Stephen Hutchinson.
Jardena's half-brother, Prince Namir, won a maiden 2000m race at New Plymouth on Thursday.

Shane Marr is unsure of plans for Jardena, who has a preference for wet tracks.
''If it rained over Cup Week, she might start (at Riccarton),'' Marr said.

The three-day New Zealand Cup meeting starts at Riccarton on November 6.

Golden Spot won yesterday's Gore Septic Tank Cleaners 1355, but had to survive a protest from the connections of the runner-up Inquisition. Trainer Shane Marr and jockey Daniel Bothamley believed their horse's chances were affected when Golden Spot moved out in the straight. The Judicial Control Authority dismissed the protest.

Marr-trained Jardena won the Manata Lodge Handicap yesterday. The grey Kashani mare is unbeaten in two starts at Gore, because she also won at the corresponding meeting 12 months ago. Twelve days after that win she scored at Wyndham.

Gore RC - Preview - 10th October

Riccarton trainer Shane Marr has a strong team entered at Gore on Sunday including; Faaltless, Miss Lisadell, Masons Run, Jardena, Mt Difficulty and Inquisition.

Faaltless (R Hannam) can overcome a good field in the R85 1355m; after a profitable winter campaign the 6yo put in a top effort for seventh in the Winter Cup. Slip Stream (K Williams) was an impressive winner here last month for Leda McNeilly and will have deserved support. Lisa Vaughan’s Our Bee Jay (A Mundy) put in a big run here on a heavy track when resuming behind Acquit. Acquit (Johnson) went another good race last week for Kerry King. Fly Solo, Roseline and Scarlet Fever are also well capable of featuring in the finish.

Masons Run and Jardena give Shane a two pronged attack in the R85 2000m. Masons Run (Hannam) is in good form, his only failure recently was in a better field than this. Jardena (Izuan) ran on ok her in her last couple and has a good course and distance record. Trilogy (D Stackhouse) won her Maiden here in heavy going last month and another big run is expected for Rangiora trainer Lester Morris. Viva La Danske (Walsh) put up a tough showing here behind Power Pack and trainer Nikki Blatch will be hoping for another heavy track.

Mt Difficulty (Izuan) will have to show his best to beat Royal Tap and Kincaple Princess in the 3yo 1200m. Royal Tap has impressed in both his starts prior to racing wide in the Wanganui Guineas for Kerry King. Kincaple Princess (Hannom) deserved her win at Motukara last month after some solid efforts through winter for Neil Coulbeck.

After two good efforts this season on the heavy track at Riccarton Miss Lisadell (D Walsh) will be favoured to take out the Maiden 1200m. Gussie Boy put in a decent effort here on debut for local Ellis Winsloe and stuck on well last week behind Justjohno. Ellis also has Mangaroa Prince lining up in the Maiden 2000m; this Golan 5yo went a good race here behind Trilogy in his southern debut last month. La Confidante (Bates) Ballyrina (Johnson) both run well at Ascot fresh up and are better suited to this distance.

Kelly Thompson has two good chances in the 1 win 1355m with in-form runners Golden Spot and Phil Wenneck. Golden Spot improved four wide last week and fought strongly behind Orlov. Phil stuck on well in a R80 last week after his good Maiden win here. Seth’s Blessed, Just Johno and Prince Of Thieves are other leading hopes.

The R70 2000m will be keenly contested; Brian and Shane Anderton’s mare Leeward Prevails (Shankar) has been hitting the line strongly in recent times and looks suited to this distance. Power Pack (M Carston) was a dominant winner here in a R75 last month for Greg Wright and went another strong race last week over 1550m. Gigi Rox (K Williams) has been good in her last five outings for Paul Harris and will be hard to leave off trifecta tickets. Joint Effort (Izuan) went super over the hurdles this season and trainer Allan Stalker will be hoping for another wet track. Lord Matua (Robinson) put in a tame effort at Motukara but was in solid form prior for the Didham’s.

Copperhead Road (Mosely) battled on strongly again last week behind Orlov and can score deserved win in the R70 1200m for Jack Gordon. Beijing Gold (Walsh) had excuses when a soundly beaten favourite at Motukara last start for the Sargent team.

O’Reilly filly The Dewdrop will be well backed after producing two tough efforts on race day for Steve Anderton. Walter Mac put in a big run here behind Phil Wenneck and battled on well last week. Mr Trimbole and Petty Lane both battled on ok here fresh up and showed enough last season to be considered.

One of the elder gentlemen of the racing team and stable favourite Bradnor was back in winning form at Banks Peninsula today. He was well off the pace throughout the race in last position and David Walsh was very patient before coming four wide around the home bend to take over for a comprehensive win, over a very even field. David Walsh was in sensational form, winning four races on the card. Stable mate Masons Run raced just in front of Bradnor throughout and finished in third position narrowly beaten for second, we were thrilled with both horses who seem to be getting better with age and although they have been in work for a while are both thoroughly enjoying it.

Earthquake in Christchurch

We are pleased that after the earthquake and the fall out from it, that the horses our staff, family and friends are all unscathed. Although we are still in some amount of shock and the after tremmors keep coming to unsettle our nerves.

There was no immediate structural damage to the Stables and all horses were boxed at the time of the quake and appeared fine when we arrived in the morning, we were a little worried as we arrived in the dark and could not really assess damage until daylight.

Riccarton Racecourse is operational and the main concern facing most stables was the availability of water.

Bahama Chica: Race 10 0-1 win 2000m Draw 12 Izuan Khairil . Had a very nice trial at Waimate finishing second to Hold it Harvey, she will have her blinkers removed tomorrow and Izuan will claim 2kg.

The Annual South Island Sales were held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Friday 6th of August.

We were very pleased with the Darci Brahma- Climb the Vine filly. A lovely big filly with a very kind nature, her dam is a G2 winning mare who won two races as a 2 year old in Australia, She is very typical of the Darci Brahma stock, plain bay in colouring and the image of the Stallion, purchased for Explosive Breeding Ltd she is typical of the value that can be found at the sale each year. She has returned to our stables and is being broken in. Purchased for $10 000 she is well under service fee of $35000.

A Handsom son of Gallant Guru and Clear as a Bell was also purchased by Clive McCall of Christchurch, from the White Robe Lodge draft, his pedigree is filled with some of White Robe Robes high performers. Clear as a Bell is a 3/4 sister to Perceptible, the second dam being Auditory and the third dam being Attentive with Prized Gem dam of Nom De Jeu also featuring in the pedigree. This colt will need a little time to grow so he has been turned out to Cindy and Simon Hamptons property at Barhill and we will look at getting him to the breaker around Christmas time. Gallant Guru was very well received by buyers. When purchasing from White Robe Lodge you know you are buying a quality individual who has been given every possible chance to carry on as a racehorse.

CJC Grand National Carnival: Day 1

We had four runners on the first day of the Carnival Mt Difficulty, Faaltless,Jardena and Masons Run.

Track conditions were not to suit Mt Difficulty who found the going a little sticky and was unable to get his feet out of the ground, Masons Run had a dream run three back on the fence, but was not his idea of a perfect position, as he likes to be out in the open, he didn't disgrace himself, Jardena ran a very nice race for 4th and Faaltless put in a very good performance in the feature of the day The Aussie Browne's Pharmacies Winter Cup, he sat at the tail of the field and made his customary run in the straight, however not quite early enough, but still a big effort for 7th after a very honest campaign this time in, he will be a major contender in a race like this next preparation.

New Colours for Go Racing

"The new season kicked off with added exctement for us last Sunday.

We had two exciting horses racing, Faaltless who is headed for the Group 3 Winter Cup this Saturday and Mt Difficulty, who debuted for a strong 3rd. There was an extra edge to their races though, as they both appeared in our new Go Racing colours of navy blue, with a white band and cap and stylised logo.

Most of our Go Racing horses will race in these colours, although there will be exceptions as we are happy to have horses race in owners colours, where they have shares.

We will have five chances this week, as both Faaltless and Mt Difficulty will race at Riccarton on Saturday, while in Australia, Vaqueros Dream will either race at Scone on Friday or Newcastle on Saturday and Our Cannavaro will race at Rosehill on Saturday. On Sunday, Cruiseonby will resume at Hawera after a recent trial win."

Promising debut for Mt Difficulty

It seems a a bit tough to ask a horse to race on its birthday, particularly if it is a baby turning three years old and also having its first race day start.

However, that is what we asked Ernie, who is better known as Mt Difficulty, to do last Sunday at Oamaru.
It was a promising start to his career in a race that looked strong on paper with plenty of trial winners and well bred horses also making their debuts. Mt Difficulty settled back, but moved closer behind the leaders on the home turn to be within striking distance. He got held up on the home turn and again at the 300 metres, but once in the clear finished the race strongly for 3rd. It was a good effort as the way the races played out during the day, it was very hard to win or make ground unless you were in the first two turning for home and close to the fence.
Mt Difficulty may now race in the 1200 metre Cashmere Plate for three year olds at Riccarton on Saturday the 7th. His immediate spring goal is the Listed the Ray Coupland Stakes over 1400 metres at Ashburton on the 17th of October and we will map out a plan for this after his race this Saturday."

Faaltless trials well ahead of the Winter Cup

Faaltless had his last hit out yesterday at Oamaru ahead of this Saturdays Group 3 Winter Cup at Riccarton.

He finished 2nd in The Jack Foley Waitaki River Trophy over 1400 metres, making impressive ground from the back of the field on a day where there was a significant on pace and on fence bias. He had a blow after the race, so the race should be a big assist to his preparation ahead of this Saturday.

He has been well placed and brought through the grades by Shane Marr and gets into the Winter Cup field on the minimum of 52 kilograms. It is a tough step up for him on Saturday as he is racing against tough and proven group gallopers, but he deserves his place in the field.
Robbie Hannam has been his regular jockey throughout this campaign and sticks with him for the big race."

Masons Run Impressive

Masons Run added to his impressive form line with a 4 length win in the R80 2200 at Oamaru on Wednesday with 5 lengths to the third horse. A fantastic effort from a R69 horse who had to get back after a wide draw, Robbie Hannam rode him behind the field and swooped around the outside of the track to hit the lead before the home corner, although the pace was on in front for most of the trip he was always confident of a win. Masons Run has benefited from recent schooling sessions with Brad Frew aboard. He is a very happy horse who is showing us at the moment the ability he showed as a 3 year old.

"Ernie" gets his chance to debut this week at Oamaru in the maiden 3yo 1200 metres. It has drawn what looks to be a strong field on paper, so will be a very competitive race. He has drawn wide in barrier 9, so has a few things against him and may have to do a bit of work early in the race to get handy, which is where we would like to ride him. He has worked well in preparation and whatever he does on Sunday, he will improve on for the experience.

We have 6 runners entered at Oamaru on Wednesday, a mix of horses which have missed racing assignments from the abandondment of Blenheim and Oamaru due to surface water.
The track has presented as a Slow 8.

All horses are very well and have put in some very good performances in their last starts including last start winner Cangowest and inform Explosive Dancer, the consistent Masons Run and Bradnor, who both have wide draws. The grey mare Jardena also very consistent and Inquisition who was trapped wide at Ashburton but put in a very nice run, he should also be not far away.

Yearling Nadeem (AUS) out of Queens Move (AUS) colt.

This colt is bred to be electric on the race track and we had no hesitation in entering him into the Karaka Million next January. By the first season speed sire Nadeem, who won the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes as a two-year-old, he is out of the winning mare Queens Move, a half sister to Red Hannigan, who ran 3rd in the Golden Slipper and won 11 races in all, including the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes as a two year old. This is a very athletic colt who is correct, strong and from an incredibly tough family.

With today’s abandonment at Oamaru, a decision has been made to schedule a meeting at Oamaru on Wednesday 28 July. The programme will be identical to today’s programme. Nominations for this new meeting will close at 9am, Saturday 24 July with withdrawals closing at 11am with the NRB.

NZ Racing: "Marlborough RC 25 July Abandoned - 22/07/10

The Marlborough Racing Club meeting scheduled for Sunday 25 July has been abandoned due to the state of the track. 20mm of rain fell at the venue on Wednesday night with the track having previously been rated Heavy 11. The track was inspected by Stipendiary Stewards and club representatives on Thursday afternoon. There is significant surface water rendering the track unsafe for racing. With more rain forecast prior to the meeting, the decision was made to abandon the meeting."

Tomorrow two runners will head to Oamaru.

Masons Run (R 10) R85 2200m drawn 4, he has been working very well and is mixing jumping into his training programme. Izuan Khairil will ride.

Explosive Dancer (R 9) R 70 1200 drawn 13 ,has also been working nicely and will look to add to her consistent form line, her field is very even with some nice horses coming into the race fresh and others also with consistent form lines. Ashlee Mundy will ride.

Ashburton Trials

Trials were held at Ashburton today, with four promising horses, running very well.

Miss Lisadell was placed second beaten ½ length, with 4 lengths back to the next place getter ridden by Ashlee Mundy she jumped and led the field just going down before the post, Kaapstaad – Flood gelding (Mundy) was also placed second beaten a neck , an improvement on his third at his previous trial on the same course. Mt Difficulty (Khairil) was impressive in his performance, winning his trial with ease by 2 lengths, he will now head to Marlborough on the 25th of July for his debut race. Postponed-Marrsharkup filly (Khairil) was having her first trial experience, she was slow away from the barrier and lost 4 lengths, however she made up ground in the straight to finish 4th in her heat, we think she will be a very nice 3 year old filly in the Autumn, she will trial again.

Faaltless marches on

Faaltless continued his march toward the Group 3, 1600 meter Winter Cup at Riccarton on the 7th of August with a 2 1/4 length win at Ashburton on Sunday over 1400 meters.

The win was his 4th from his last 5 starts and was impressive as he gave the leader an 8 length start as they approached the home turn. He has formed a winning partnership with Robbie Hannam and he responded as soon as Robbie asked him to quicken and won in a time of 1.23.96, a fast time for a slow track.

Faaltless is now to a rating of 85 points which may put him on the margin for a start in the Winter Cup, but he has one more opportunity before then to increase his rating when he races in the Winter Cup trial at Marlborough on the 25th of July over 1400 meters.

Faaltless is raced by the Raceit To Run syndicate which has shown great patience in the horse and a belief that the raw ability he has shown will be brought out by trainer Shane Marr. They are being well rewarded now.
